Ring Around The Valley (Medium)

Distance: 47 miles and 1100 feet of elevation gain (mapping software)

All routes make a counterclockwise trip around the Valley – the longer the route, the larger the loop. The long and this medium stay together for the first 24 miles as they first head north to the Sylmar area before turning west to ride past the San Fernando Mission. While the long makes a loop further to the west, this medium splits off to head directly south (stopping for lunch along the way) and then rejoins the long route as it heads for a loop through Balboa Park. After the Park, both routes ride past the mural in the Tujunga Wash and then head directly back to the start at the Zoo.  The extra loop ridden by the long riders adds almost no climbing, so the amount of climbing and the profile for this route are almost the same as the long. There are no major hills, but, as you can see by the profile, it is a steady up-grade to the high point at the northern edge of the Valley and then mostly downhill after that. On the map, the red portion is the common route with the long and the blue portion is where this medium cuts the long route short.
