Wandering Thru Whittier (Long)

Distance: 65 miles and 1400 feet of elevation gain (barometric)

Both the long and medium routes are the same today except that the long adds an extra loop near the end of the route. The two routes stay together for the first 45 miles which is a few miles past the lunch stop. The two routes start by heading east to where they pick up the Rio Hondo River trail. They take this south to the Whittier Narrows area. They then ride into Whittier where they pick up the Whittier Greenway bike trail. After riding this, they continue on a loop to the south through La Mirada and Norwalk before returning back to Whittier for lunch. After lunch the two routes continue together as they return to the Whittier Narrows area. Here the two routes split. This long picks up the San Gabriel River and rides this north all the way to the Santa Fe Dam. It then completes the ride by heading back west (mostly along Longden Ave) to the start. As you can see by the profile, there are only a few small hills. The first portion of the ride is gently downhill and the return is gently uphill.
