Distance: 37 miles and 3100 feet of elevation gain (barometric)
All routes today head up to Descanso and on to Montrose for lunch. After lunch, all three routes use the same return to the start. The differences are in the way up to Descanso. This long visits three areas we don’t visit on any of our other Sunday rides, but each includes a climb. First up, we head over to Elysian Park and do a climb to the top where we can look down into Dodger Stadium (the first bump at mile 9 on the profile). It’s possible the Dodgers will be playing a play-off game today. Then we head over to the Mount Washington area and again ride to the top (the 2nd bump at mile 15). Finally we head over to Glendale and ride up and over Camino San Rafael (the 3rd and highest spike). This final climb is very difficult. Once over the top, we drop down to Chevy Chase to join the other routes as they continue to Descanso (the small hump at mile 28) and on to lunch. After lunch, the common return is almost all downhill as we whiz down Verdugo and back to the Zoo. Although this long is only 37 miles (shorter than most of our long routes), it is very hilly and will provide a work-out comparable to our usual long routes.
