Distance: 101 miles and 5100 feet of elevation gain (barometric)
This is the clockwise route. This means that starting in Thousand Oaks, we first go over to Potrero and ride down this very steep grade. Once down in the Oxnard area we ride a long flat stretch as we head to the coast and north along the coast to Ventura. Once in Ventura we begin a very long climb up to Ojai and then up to the top of Dennison Grade. Although this is a long climb, most of it is not very steep and only a couple of miles after leaving Ojai is significantly steep. This is followed by the long downhill into Santa Paula. A few miles along South Mountain Road takes us to our next major climb of the day – Grimes Canyon. We ride into Moorpark and then the last climb of the day over the Moorpark ridge and back down into Thousand Oaks. As you can see by the profile, almost all of the climbing is in the second half and this is why some claim this route is more difficult than the counterclockwise route. However, none of the climbing is as difficult as the Potrero climb on the counterclockwise route and, in my experience, that has always made this route easier.
