Janus Full Century – Counterclockwise

Distance: 101 miles and 5100 feet of elevation gain (barometric)

Starting in Thousand Oaks, we first go up and over Erbes Rd and down into Moorpark.  This is a relatively easy climb. From Moorpark we climb over Grimes Canyon. This is the first spike on the profile (at about 16 miles) and it is somewhat steep for the last two miles. We ride along South Mountain Road into Santa Paula and then begin the longest and highest climb of the day as we climb Hwy 150 up Dennison Grade. We descend into Ojai and then continue our descent all the way to the coast in Ventura. After lunch in Ventura, a long flat stretch takes us along the coast to Oxnard and then inland to our final climb. This is Potrero, which most riders know to be a very difficult climb. Only about 1 mile of the climb is extremely steep but the entire climbing portion of Potrero is about 7 miles long with a short downhill in the middle. Once over the final top of Potrero, it’s an easy ride through Hidden Valley and back to the start. As you can see by the profile, most of the climbing is in the first half and this is why some claim today’s route is easier.  However, the most difficult climb of the day comes at about the 90 mile mark and I have always found this makes for a more difficult day.  Note: the route sheet includes instructions for avoiding Potrero. This adds about 5 miles and doesn’t lessen the total amount of climbing – it just spreads it out in easier grades. The map and elevation profile do not show this option.
